Distances in New Jersey are short and the constraints are not. The New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway carry most of the long moves, but the Parkway has passenger-car sections and the Turnpike has its own permit gate. New Jersey Permits & Oversize-Load Compliance
Oversize permits for state highways come from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, through its Trucking Services permit office and the SUPERLOAD system. NJDOT does not cover the toll facilities: the New Jersey Turnpike Authority permits the Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway, and the South Jersey Transportation Authority permits the Atlantic City Expressway. Hudson River crossings fall to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the Delaware River bridges to their own commissions. Route approval, escort requirements, curfew windows and holiday restrictions all attach to those permits. Setting, Leveling & Anchoring in New Jersey
The shore counties sit in HUD Wind Zone II; inland and northern New Jersey is Wind Zone I. That line drives the tie-down plan, and on a coastal site it drives the pier layout as well. Soils split just as cleanly. South Jersey is Coastal Plain sand and silt with a high water table — excellent drainage, poor bearing if the footings are undersized, and real risk of settlement in the Pinelands. North Jersey gives you Piedmont red shale, traprock ridges and Highlands rock, sometimes only inches under the topsoil, which changes how anchors get driven. Frost depth is moderate but real, and footings go below whatever the local code official enforces.
When to Schedule Your New Jersey Move
May through October is the clean stretch. Coastal work gets a caveat: Atlantic hurricane season runs June into November, and a tropical system tracking up the coast will stop a shore move for days, not hours. Winter is workable in the north but freeze-and-thaw cycles chew up unpaved park drives, and February site work often means waiting on the ground rather than the weather. Summer shore traffic is its own obstacle, so we time Ocean and Cape May county moves for weekday mornings whenever the schedule allows.
