Four Georgias, roughly. North of Atlanta the Blue Ridge takes over: narrow state routes, steep drives, and clearance problems from tree canopy. Metro Atlanta is a restriction problem more than a terrain one, with I-75, I-85, I-20 and GA-400 all funneling toward the I-285 perimeter. Along the Fall Line through Columbus, Macon and Augusta, piedmont red clay gives way to sand. South of that, I-16 and I-75 run across coastal plain where the ground is flat, the sand is deep, and US-82, US-84 and US-441 carry most of the rural work. The coast around Savannah and Brunswick adds marsh, tide and salt to everything.

Georgia Permits & Oversize-Load Compliance
Georgia has a quirk worth knowing: the Oversize Permit Unit sits under the Georgia Department of Public Safety, not the Department of Transportation, and permits are filed through GAPROS, the Georgia Permitting and Routing Optimization System. The permit sets the route and the travel rules, and Georgia enforces those tightly. Movement is daylight only, Sunday travel is not allowed for permitted loads, and the weekday rush-hour windows on I-285 and through metro Atlanta are closed. Oversize loads also need the required banners in place front and rear. We file through GAPROS, take the routing that comes back, and add whatever county or city permit the destination requires.

Setting, Leveling & Anchoring in Georgia
Six Georgia counties are HUD Wind Zone II — Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Glynn, Liberty and McIntosh — and everything else in the state is Wind Zone I. Georgia also runs one of the more specific installation regimes in the region. Installers are licensed through the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire, an installation permit is purchased for each home, and the installation report filed with the state has to include torque probe readings taken within two feet of each corner of the home along with the soil bearing capacity the installer determined. That is good discipline anyway. Coastal sand, piedmont red clay and mountain lots north of Dahlonega all read very differently on a probe, and the pier and anchor plan follows the reading, not habit.
When to Schedule Your Georgia Move
October through April is the comfortable half of the year here. Fall is ideal — dry ground, tolerable heat, hurricane risk falling away. Georgia summers are brutal for crews working under a home, and the afternoon storms are relentless, though the work still gets done. The coast from Savannah down to St. Marys carries real hurricane exposure from August into October. Winter almost never stops a move in south Georgia; north of Atlanta an ice event will close the mountain routes for a day or two.

On top of that, weekday rush-hour periods are closed to permitted movement and Sunday travel is not allowed. Most Atlanta-area moves get routed around the perimeter and timed mid-day.
Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Glynn, Liberty and McIntosh, the coastal tier. The rest of Georgia is HUD Wind Zone I. A home rated only for Zone I cannot be installed in those six counties, which comes up constantly when a used home is bought inland and moved toward the coast.
