Indiana splits the job in a way that catches out-of-state haulers off guard. Oversize and overweight permits are issued by the Indiana Department of Revenue Motor Carrier Services division, operating under rules set by the Indiana Department of Transportation. The application covers dimensions, axle spacing and the exact route, and what comes back has restrictions attached: escorts where the width calls for them, limits on travel days and hours, and no-move periods around holidays. A state permit is not universal coverage either — the Indiana Toll Road authorizes its own facility, and cities and counties can require separate clearance for the last stretch to the site. Setting, Leveling & Anchoring in Indiana
Indiana is HUD Wind Zone I, which is not the same as saying wind is irrelevant. The state sits in a corridor that sees genuine tornado weather every spring, so tie-downs get the correct anchor for the soil, correct spacing, and torque to the manufacturer specification rather than close enough. Soil decides the rest. Northern sands drain well and take a straightforward pier layout. Central Indiana till clay swells wet and shrinks dry, and it will walk a badly blocked home out of level in a season. Southern Indiana adds slope, residual clay over limestone, and the occasional void under ground that looks solid. Footings go below the frost depth the county enforces.
When to Schedule Your Indiana Move
May through October is prime moving season here. March and April are the worst of it: frost coming out of the ground, county roads softening, and a gravel drive that carried traffic all winter turning to soup under a loaded toter. Winter moves do happen and the interstates stay open, but lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan can bury the northern tier in a day, and no setup crew levels a home well in a driving storm.
